Schreiben Gasparris an Bourne vom 2. Mai 1918
"Most Eminent and Reverend Lord,
I desire to follow up my telegram of protest, and to conform it. Never have I uttered the words which have been attributed to me, or any resembling them, and I challenge the author of the letter published in the Times to produce even a shadow of proof of his calumny.
Moreover, I wish to say in completion of my protest that not only have I never uttered the words attributed to me, but on several occasions I have stated that England, preferably to any other Power, would inspire absolute confidence by her perfect impartiality, her entire respect for vested rights, and her zeal for progress in the Holy Places.

Die italienische Zeitung "Italia" brachte einen Bericht in ihrer Ausgabe vom 22. Mai des Jahres mit der Übersetzung des Schreibens.
"L'Inghilterra e I Luoghi Santi. Una lettera del Card. Gasparri.
Londra, maggio
In una lettera diretta al Times e firmata 'Civis britannicus sum' si affermava che in occasione dell'entrata delle truppe alleate a Gerusalemme il cardinale Gasparri avrebbe espresso il suo rammarico per il fatto che la liberazione della Città Santa era stata compiuta da forze che non professano la vera fede.
In risposta a tale affermazione, il cardinale Segretario di Stato ha inviata al cardinale Bourne, la seguente lettera, pubblicata dal giornale cattolico The Tablet:
'Eminenza reverendissima,
Desidero dar seguito al mio telegramma di protesta le parole che mi sono siate attribuite o qualsiasi altra che rassomigli loro sfido l'autore della lettera pubblicata dal Times a produrre anche un'ombra di prova della sua calunnia. Inoltre desidero dire a compimento della mia protesta che non solo non ho mai proferito le parole attribuitemi, ma che in parecchie occasioni ho detto che l'Inghilterra a preferenza di ogni altra potenza ispira assoluta fiducia per la sua perfetta imparzialità, il suo pieno rispetto dei diritti dei terzi ed il suo zelo per l'avvenire dei Luoghi Santi. Mi confermo, signor Cardinale, con distinta considerazione.
